Headstone Inscriptions

Writing an inscription for a headstone is a very personal process allowing loved ones to share there memories with the world.

The following information has been collated as a useful guide to those writing inscriptions.
Although there are no specific rules inscriptions normally contain a minimum for name, date of birth and date of death.

Many memorial and gravestone inscriptions follow a format by breaking copy into 3 set areas.
Heading - Normally found at the top of the headstone, examples include; In Loving Memory, Treasured Memories, Special Memories and many more.

Headstone Inscriptions

Body Copy - This normally includes the name of deceased, data of birth and death and shared thoughts.

Verse - The verse is normally used at the bottom of the headstone.

Once the copy for headstone is complete you will have to decide on the font and finish, this is personal choice but you need to consider how they will complement stone choice. Stones masons will be able to give you excellent advice in this area based on their extensive experience.

Generally there are 4 main fonts used on headstones and memorials in the UK; however other fonts are now also available.

Finishes for headstones

Many inscriptions are now designed on a computer then transferred to a template with covers the stone as it is sand blasted. Once this process is complete the wording can then be finished using paint, lead or gild depending on the finished required.
